Located in downtown Allegan right on the Kalamazoo River is a coffeehouse that also makes some of the best soups and sandwiches around. Mug Shots is the coffeehouse I speak of and there is so much more to Allegan then I originally thought.
When walking in you see a various mugshots of old criminals. The menu offers various soups, salads and sandwiches for various styles. There are vegetarian options as well as some unique flavor combinations. They have a lunch option where you choose two and get a cup of soup, salad, or half a sandwich. I chose to go with that and ordered the Al Capone with a cup of Tuscan Stew.
The Al Capone is a cold Italian sandwich that has ham, salami, provolone cheese, a pesto mayo and then topped with tomato, roasted red peppers and romaine lettuce. The Tuscan Stew was made with tomato, carrots, parsnips, rutabaga, cannellini beans, portobellas, pesto, mushrooms and zucchini. The sandwich was fresh and delicious but the stew is what stood out. The large chunks of vegetables and spices made this vegetarian stew a great lunch on a colder day.
If you are around Allegan be sure to swing into Mug Shots and grab yourself some amazing lunch and sit by the window over looking the Kalamazoo River. I hope next time to come in here for breakfast as they also offer some great breakfast choices.
